This past summer - if the tractor sat for more than 2-3 days...it wouldnt start. At the time - was a 24v system. 1st thing I did was replace the battery's - 2 brand new JD 12v's. Seemed to help for awhile - but not long and was back to not starting...The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. Let oil bleed out the line until no bubbles are present then tighten the fitting. Be careful as the steering wheel may jump after the bubbles are gone. Good morning, Our '72 4020 leaks significantly from the steering motor pinion seal during cold weather operation. The colder the weather, the worse the leak. For reference, last week when operating at - 20 F, the leak was a steady stream. Once the tractor and/or ambient temp. warms up the leak stops or slows to an imperceptible amount.

It's also why Deere special ordered those pumps with an easily adjustable advance screw. 4020 is supposed to get a timing advance up around 16 engines degrees. That is a lot, and if it's not happening it can make a big difference in performance. 4020 is supposed to advance 2 engine degrees by 1000 engine RPM.
